Wireless Router Setup in Residence
I own a Linksys WRT310N and at home I use it as a secondary router for my network. Since the wall between the home office and the living room is actually a garage wall, the signal doesn't go very far. This router is set as a switch (DHCP Server Disabled) so that there is one network and not two. In residence, should I be running my own small network (Enable DHCP Server) and use the McMaster network only for internet access or should I use it as a wireless switch (Leave DHCP Server Disabled) and connect directly to the school network?

I was thinking the second option but I may need to share my printer with my roommate without sharing it with everyone at school.
Maybe Windows Homegroup could work. I haven't been using Windows 7 since the Beta way back and I only used it on one system so I never tried the networking functions.

Well that is something you have to work out with your roommate. If you need to share your printer with your roommate having it set as the first option for a period of time wouldn't be too hard. I'm not sure how many ethernet cables you're given when you come to McMaster but you can use the first option to share the printer and just be wired in for the internet usage on residence. When you feel the need to go wireless (sit on the couch or something without having the wire laying on the middle of the floor) then use the second option.

Okay so I guess I'll just leave DHCP Server Disabled and share the printer in HomeGroup or something else that uses a password. I just don't want to miss something like DC++ in order to secure my printer.

I also thought this since in my year someone got their router taken away. But I couldn't find any information about that.

Ask the university that, there are some weird rules that make no sense and no one understands.

We had one in my apartment in Bates last year, and by the looks of it when it shows available networks a lot of our neighbours upstairs, downstairs etc. had one too. So I'd definitely look into it.

Probably because in the past people didn't secure their routers so anyone could access them.
