Article Rewind: Residence & Off-Campus Living
Thinking about living in residence in September, or maybe off-campus in a student house with friends? MacInsiders has you covered! We have dozens of great advice and tips from choosing a residence or off-campus house, to move-in, to surviving the year with room/house mates!
First, if you aren't sure whether to live in residence or live off-campus, read our "
Residence Or Off-Campus: You Choose" article.
If you choose to live in res but haven't decided which residence you would prefer to live in, check out "
How To Choose A Residence" and our
PROS and CONS Of Each Residence article. We also have a lot of other residence tips in our
Residence Advice section.
Decided to live off-campus? MacInsiders has done extensive coverage on living off-campus. After
introductions to basics, we gave advice on
who to live with,
putting a group together,
where to live,
what to look for when finding a place, as well as some tips on
what to look for in housing leases. You may also want to check out
MacShare, or the annual
housing fair that takes place on campus. We then took a look at what to bring and how to maintain the
bathroom,
kitchen,
laundry room,
front closet,
common room, and of course, your
bedroom.
Once you're settled down in your new place there are also other things to take into account such as how to
survive your roommates, advice on
dining off campus, checking out the local
pubs and
clubs. You may also want to look into purchasing a
meal plan (the Freedom Account) for when you get hungry on campus.
You also need to
think technology. Do you want a laptop to carry or have a PC at home? How are you going to
protect your computer? You can check out the forum discussion
here.
Finally, as an off-campus student you will want to get involved with and join SOCS, the
Society of Off Campus Students.
Off-campus living can be fun at McMaster if you seek out the right people, equip yourself with knowledge and advice, and take advantage of the opportunities available to you!
