How big are classes?
I was wondering... How big are class sizes for lectures, labs, tutorials, etc? (Physics, Chem, Engineering, etc.)

How many students on average for classes/courses in first year engineering?

In first year, class sizes are generally pretty big. Ranging from 400-500 students depending on the program. Labs and tutorials are smaller, about 20-30 students or less even. I'm not sure about engineering, but there are a lot of students in that faculty so it's a safe bet to say that classes are probably large. In upper years, class sizes get smaller as you specialize more and get into smaller programs.

It was somewhere between 300-400 last year. Electives are bigger 400+

Physics is generally smaller. 1B03 we had maybe 200 students in 1 section (There were 2 sections) and 1BB3 we had approximately 150-200 students in total.

I just realized that you were talking about engineering courses, so my information probably isn't relevant...

math in jhe had about 350 people, econ in mdcl had the most people and I think one of my smaller classes might have been physics in ABB and materials in jhe. Physics tutorials/labs have about 20 people.

Most are 200-300. Math is around 200 since JHE cant hold many seats haha :p

But yea, courses like ECON would be close to 500

I think people are over-exaggerating a bit. Most of the classes for engineering student (if not all of them) had less than 200 people. The class with the most people was math (around 200... can be much higher for Childs' though :p), and the one with the least was probably Materials at about 60 (around 5 - 10 if you went to the early lectures :p).

Tutorials, I personally found, were a little ridiculously over booked. It was not uncommon to see Engineering 1P03 tutorials with 50+ people. Average for other classes was probably about 30.

Labs again were about 30 people, with the exception of engineering 1C03 which probably had 40 to 50.

Those classes are in MDCL1305. I believe it's that really big room that can be combined with 1307. Not sure if they will be combined, but it's still a really big class.

Yeah, 1305/1307 are the same room as far as I know (MDCL). I had my first year linguistics class in there, like 500+ people.

:p You lazy engineers. I TA'd engineering calculus (Math 1N03) back in 2006, and I had three students who attended regularly, and maybe 2 or 3 others each week.

Well, there are no more math tutorials. I'm talking about the tutorials you get marked in (which now happens to be all of them), so everyone was always there :(.

I think MDCL 1305/1307 is the biggest lecture hall on campus. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought that one class on the ground floor of BSB was the largest on campus? I could be wrong as well...
