This thread is going towards browsers. Firefox is the best, just for the extensions alone. FF3.5 and Minefield are fast too.
Safari/Chrome are quick and the Webkit engine is efficient and follows standards well, but no extensions.
Opera has extensions, but not as many as Firefox.
IE8 is okay... don't know how good the extensions are. I don't use it.
Back to laptops.
Macs come with OS X installed. OS X is a decent operating system, it gets less viruses than Windows, but it is not compatible with everything. e.g. if you wanted to run another program, you'd have to either run a windows virtual machine, or dualboot. This is kinda tedious if you just have one app you want to run.
If you just installed Windows you can run every app there is (except mac ones, but there are windows equivalents usually).
Macs look nice. If you want to be trendy, buy one. Hot girls buy macs (from what I've seen in class) and I'm sure if a girl saw you with a Mac they would probably say "oh I have one of those too. let's talk about how we both want to suck steve jobs' cawk".
Macs are overpriced. case and point, macbook air. Netbooks are 1/10 of the cost and have better specs (just shape and design are different).
The same goes to the other macbooks. Compare them to comparable laptops.
What laptop you get depends on what you're going to use it for.
if gaming, get a high-end laptop ($1500-$2000) which would act as a desktop replacement. But you're gonna get owned with the battery life.
Most everything else, you can get away with a medium-range laptop ($700-$1500).
If you just need it for internet and MS Office, then low-end would be fine too ($500-$700). netbooks ($200-$500, I think) might be good too, not sure about how they well handle office programs though.
Laptops should last you as long as possible (until it breaks from wear and tear). 3-10 years is a fine range. but it really depends on your preference.
Do not get Alienware or anything that costs over $2000. Unless you have the money.

Good post.

In terms of browsers, most people (Apple excluded ) have been saying that Safari 4 is pretty subpar.
That said, which OS the developers had in mind during development makes a huge difference. Safari for PCs is going to be slower than Safari for Macs- and since tests tend to use the same computers to get rid of variables, that is going to mean big differences for whether it was tested on a Mac or PC. (All terms describing size are relative, huge would still mean a difference of seconds).

This would be the most recent test I've seen.
And of course, there are other factors as well. Chrome has incognito mode, (which is in the new FF beta as well), FF has the support of all its add ons, etc. I'm a huge Firefox fanboy, but I use Chrome when some sites won't display properly in FF.
But since every browser outside of Chrome is available for both, it shouldn't factor too heavily into your decision.

Some pages in Firefox don't display properly? o.O
Firefox also integrated HTML 5 support.

I have a MacBook Aluminum. It takes some getting used to but I love it. Plus, it's easier to carry to classes and the sorts. It is also able to handle all challenges.

The only one that routinely gives me trouble is watching TV online through CTV- and I am relatively certain that is because of AdBlock Plus, not Firefox itself. I just have this aversion to adding pages to my white list, so I just load it into a different browser instead.
Its not a huge deal for me though. I've been looking for an excuse to keep Chrome on my computer after I decided it wouldn't be replacing FF as my primary browser.

I've never had to get it fixed so I don't know. I'd probably just fix it myself if I had a problem since the warranty is over anyway.
