What laptop is best for university?
I am wondering which laptop would be best for university. It will be my my computer and tv, contain my notes, be my communication to my family, as well as the internet and downloading music. I've considered Asus, Toshiba and Samsung. I currently have an HP, which I hate and has a terrible battery.

I'm looking for something with intel i5 or i7 or amd a8 or a10, ram with at least 4g, and 500gb of storage or more. Also, a decent battery life.

Sounds like the Sony Vaio Z can meet all of your requirements. 1080p screen for your movies & TV, can be specced up to 512 gb SSD storage wich will be lightning fast, thin and light form factor (I think it is the lightest laptop out there at the moment or at least one of the top 5) so it will be very easy to transport to class and back. Also has the latest i5/i7 ivy bridge quad core processor as well as 4 gb RAM minimum (can be specced higher) so it can serve quite well as a desktop replacement. You can also opt for an extended battery that can bump you up to over 10 hours of battery life.

Only downside though is that it is quite expensive.

*You should have included a flame shield, since the legion of fanboys from both sides will come to this thread and start battling and blood shedding. LOL. * JK

Now, to your thread.
ASUS is the best out of the named brands that you mentioned. You ask for decent battery. You might need to be a bit more specific. If you are going with a quad-core process, 8 or more GB of ram, plus a decent graphics. All of that will drain your battery pretty fast. Will you trade a bit of performance for more battery or vice-versa. There are some laptops with great battery with i7 and 8GB but those can be pricey.

Now, what i believe:
If you love performance go with i5 or i7. AMD processor tend to heat up faster, and that is bad for the lifespan of your laptop.
4GB of ram is good. Better Processor is more important IMO.
500 GB of storage is good, but it depends on how much you download on your old laptop.
Get a laptop with an nvidia or amd/ati graphics card for movies or gaming in the future. Alot of media players like Media Player Classic like to use the graphics card to do some of the work when watching a movie.

My current laptop:
*Gateway*
intel core i7-2670QM
nvidia Geforce GTM 540M, 1GB or VRAM
8 GB of DDR3 ram
1 Terabyte of storage

Sorry for the long post Hope it helps.

A MacBook Pro that can dual boot Windows.

I got a Lenovo Y480 for $1105 and it has amazing specs: 8 GB of ram, 1TB Hard drive, some good NVIDIA graphics card, JBL speakers and a 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) processor.

But I would recommend getting it in person, because I ordered it directly from Lenovo's website and it took then 37 days to ship it to me, even though I ordered from Lenovo Canada

Lenovo thinkpads have top quality, durability, non-gaming performance, and battery life among all PC vendors. Asus is pretty good too

Ack if only exams are over. Then I would write the great "WHICH LAPTOP IS BETTER" Thread.

Most likely all are pretty the same. Asus imo has the best lasting/quality. To compare your notebook stats, google laptop video card rank and laptop processsor rank and compare. Do realize lower battery =/= bad quality battery, it could mean your video card/processor are higher powered and require more energy

You really have to state a budget, but an Asus Zenbook Prime meets all your requirements and has damn near universally good reviews.

or ultrabook - I found that battery life can be pretty important..when there are no plugs around.

my lenovo t series 15 inch with 9 cell battery easily pulled 8+ hours when i first got it (4 years ago). They also offer the slice battery on the 14inch models which can give you like 20 hours.

My sister had an acer that was cheap and worked fine. It wouldve lasted her alot longer if she knew how to protect it from viruses and malware. She was pretty willy-nilly about internet use.
