So after reading these comments I assume that my HP must be a fluke or something. Going on three years and it still works very well, I only need to ask HP to send me a new charging cord soon.

If you are in the area you may want to visit the Bookstore and talk to someone in the computer department. Even if you are looking to buy elsewhere they are and were students at Mac everyday so they know what a student needs to get you through the next 4 years.

For a sample of some of the lap tops we carry and the education discounts on hardware and software see the Back to School Flyer

If you are in the area you may want to come to the campus bookstore and talk to someone in the computer department. They are and were McMaster students so they know a lot about how students use their machines and what they will need to get them them through the next four years. Even if you are looking to buy somewhere else it doesn't hurt to ask some question.

For a sample of some of our laptop models and education pricing see the back to school flyer.

I would definitely go for a MacBook Pro. Expensive at first but I got mine 1st year and going into 4th year I haven't had a single problem with it. Even with downloading music/movies it is just as fast as when I first bought it. Buy it from Titles and you'll get a pretty good student discount too!

What do you do when you have to run the occasional Windows-only program?

I would definitely avoid HP though.

I would stick with a MBA, Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell XPS, or ASUS.
My Dell is over 2 years old now. Such a beast, was $1100 in July 2010. i7, 4GB ram, 500GB hd, 1GB GPU, 17inch (but I only went with the 1600x900 resolution). I smashed the corner of it where the hinge (and power button) is. Duct taped the button back to the connector and the whole area back into one piece. It seems like my 17 inch was made much better than the 15's I've seen. The screen/hinges seem so much more durable and the case doesn't feel cheap at all. Only issued I've had is with heating. It gets super hot when playing certain games (not all, even high performance ones oddly) so I purchased a laptop cooler which does the trick.

Sorry about the mistake. Just mixing up different forum rules in my head and thought throwing everything into one thread would have been more organized. -.-
