I know that...

What I was saying, is that a person (like the guy who killed at Virginia Tech) might join this club, learn about the use of firearms and get a handgun at the States.

I support the possession of any firearms including automatic assault rifles.

It's a basic right. Having weapons is what makes the government think twice before doing something tyrannical.

That is one of the reasons why the USA's Bill of Rights are 1000000x better than Canadian laws.

Example: In Canada, when the political parties wanted to form a coalition against the Conservative party... Who decided the outcome ? Not the people... The Queen (well the ***** who represents the Queen).

Good luck with the club!
I don't have anything against rifles and shotguns, but the world would be a much better place without the private ownership of handguns. There is no legitimate reason to own a handgun beyond killing another human being. Sport is no excuse; grenade throwing is probably a fun hobby but it'd be a stretch to justify.

As for legal gun ownership vs violent crimes... look at Switzerland! A large % of their population has a fully automatic rifle and a sealed pack of ammo in their home as part of their reserve forces yet they have a miniscule murder rate.

I would love to see that replace the shot put in the Summer Olympics. Shot put seems to be the weak end.

Javelin is cooler anyways. Ever seen that video of the official impaled in the shoulder downrange because he wasn't paying attention?

Yep. That video was like the March of my 2008. Or some time around there.

Well, I have to say, I wholeheartedly and respectfully have to disagree on this one. There are many thousands of Canadians who are avid pistol shooters, and who enjoy the sport safely every day. There are many different disciplines, from the olympic and common wealth games variety, to cowboy action shooting with period appropriate handguns, to IPSC/IDPA/PPC action style shooting.

Canadian laws are designed to prohibit conceal carry style guns (e.g. Super compacts or 'mouse guns'), which aren't terribly accurate and some people feel they have limited sporting use.

Lets say you wanted to have a handgun and take it to a club to have some fun or practice for a competition, you would have to do the following:

1) Take the restricted and non-restricted safety courses ($240 and an entire weekend)
2) Wait three weeks for the OPP to return your test results
3) Send your paperwork to the RCMP with $80
4) Wait 28 days (minimum), have the RCMP interview two references and your spouse/GF
5) Go to gun store, choose a gun, pay for gun($!!!!!!!).
6) Wait for the transfer to be completed. Wait for a temporary permit to take it home to be issued.
7) Take gun home. Trigger locked and in a locked case.
8) Join a gun club (full membership clubs run about $300-600 in ontario, also many require many months to be a full member)
9) Take a club level safety course ($80-100, about 5 hours and 5 separate observation shoots)
10) Wait for club / OPP to process your transport permit
11) Go make holes in paper.

The average time from course to being able to go to a club on your own with your own gun seems to be about 6 months. The thousands of people who are responsible, legal handgun shooters clearly are some pretty responsible and patient people if you ask me.

This right here is the BIG point:

Controlling objects instead of people does NOT work, because it CANNOT work

Do you think a criminal who is about to commit a murder cares about having a valid gun license? Nope.
How about a criminal using an illegal switch-blade style knife to mug a little old lady cares that the knife is illegal? Not so much.
Criminals commiting crimes? thats crazy talk!

How do you control people? With appropriate laws and meaningful sentences.

And to ZombieJesus: I would like to extend a personal invitation to get you out shooting handguns. I will even provide the ammunition on my own dime. I think you should totally give it a shot (Pun 100% intended).

Hi all,

It's good to see this thread is being used to discuss the topic.

Several new things. Firstly, we now have an official email address: [email protected]. All MAA executives have access to this account so it's your best bet for a quick reply. Alternatively, feel free to contact any of us personally. Secondly, McMaster Arms Association now appears on the MSU website: www.msumcmaster.ca/clubs/listings, but please note that some of the information presented is not accurate and we are working to fix this. For instance the purpose is incomplete, the contact email is outdated, VP should be Gilbert Leung and Treasurer should be Jeff Chan ([email protected]) . We also have a new logo, a preview for which is in my avatar. The logo will appear on various club media such as posters.

We also recently received our event planning PIN so I am pleased to announce that our first general/introductory meeting is tentatively scheduled for Feb 28, 2011. We are awaiting approval from EOHSS before we can confirm the date/time/location with Conference Services. We will update you on all the details as soon as we have them.

As always, contact us should you have any questions or input, and tell your friends to hurl us an email if they're interested!

Cheers,

Brian Nixon
President - MAA

Hi all,

I am pleased to annouce that our first general meeting has been confirmed for Thursday March 24, 2011 at 4:30 pm in Chester New Hall 102 (right inside the doors of the North entrance). We have the room booked for 1.5 hours but the meeting shouldn't be anywhere near that long unless there are a lot of questions. The meeting will consist of exec introductions, club preliminaries and Q&A. We don't have a lot of time to advertise this event so please spread the word. When the meeting has ended you'll have the option to stay and chat over some free pizza!

As always, contact us should you have any questions or concerns, and I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday!

Cheers,

Brian Nixon
President - MAA

Hi Folks, this is just to let you know about a firearms related event that is coming up soon that if the MAA interests you, this may be worth a look.

I AM NOT, NOR IS THIS EVENT OFFICIALLY AFFILIATED OR ASSOCIATED WITH THE MCMASTER ARMS ASSOCIATION

Target Sports Canada is doing an Open House on April 10th to support the Red Cross' relief efforts in Japan.

$30 gets you on the range to try three different handguns, free BBQ and an entry to the raffle for a handgun, or if you're not licensed, a fun shoot for you and your friends.

NO LICENCE OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED, JUST BE OVER 18 (and bring gov issued ID)

Facebook Page for the event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1972949 73635051
Range Website: http://www.Targetsportscanad a.com
Photos from the last event: http://www.pbase.com/elegantcam/ts_glockday10

And its for charity! Come on folks! See you there!

And again....
