When is the e-mail system getting here?!
I have been wondering that for some time as well and I have some info.
The reason for the delay in implementing this new email system has been contract negotiations. McMaster would like to include provincial law within this new contract much like the University of Alberta did last year and to do so requires Google to dedicate their legal team to this issue. This did not take place until August, I don't really have an answer as to why other than near the end of the summer UofT signed with Microsoft for a system based off outlook/hotmail called
[email protected] and in this contract provincial law was cited. Recently OCAD moved over to Gmail/Google Apps and in they accepted in principle the McMaster contract. Basically the reason this has taken to so long is that Gmail/Google Apps is not only applied to post-secondary educational institutions but also k-12 and high school. This contract might very well be the model for all other Ontario institutions and the OCAD situation is a good example of that.
Since that point there has been some back and forth between McMaster and Google. McMaster will be setting up some test accounts soon and if anyone is interested in one please email me at
[email protected] r.ca
I know that it has taken longer than expected, but Mac has been pretty supportive of this initiative. Unfortunately getting Google to dedicate their legal team to develop our contract which potentially could become the model for all other educational institutions in Ontario has taken a considerable amount of time.
When the date is set for the implementation I promise I will be on here updating everyone as I cannot wait to say "it's finally here!" In the meantime, however, I will keep you posted on the details as they happen.
Sincerely,
