If you drew every match of the season, you would be undefeated but it would leave you with 38 points, barely avoiding relegation.
I usually never write United off in the league, but this year they honestly don't seem like contenders for the top spot. They may be a good side when all their first choice players are healthy and Rooney is in form, but teams shouldn't rely on such favourable situations or 1/2 key players. United lack the key to title contention...depth.

Just looking at past seasons:
06/07 - 17 points at this stage
07/08 - 17 points at this stage
08/09 - 15 points
09/10 - 19 points
this season - 14 points, 5 points off top.. Given the fact that we've already played Everton, a team that has a history of bothering us, Liverpool, although yes they are struggling, & Fulham, another team that historically bothers us. We're only 5 goals behind Chelsea. This team can challenge for the title, however they will not win the league for a few reasons.
1) They are in a transitional period, as they were last season
2) They are lacking leaders in the squad, again because of the transition
3) The defense is lacking cohesion, lets face it Ferdinand & Van der Sar are past their best. Evra has had a hard time since the world cup, Vidic can't single handedly marshal the defense and the right back position has been lacking quality for a while.
4) We have not had a natural goalscorer or poacher since van Nistelrooy.
5) Carrick and Anderson has really been off form this season, making our midfield less cohesive.
6) Valencia has been missed on the right, and the lack of wingers has really exposed the team.
Seeing what has happened with Liverpool makes me wish the same would happen with Man United. Because although there has been claims of a huge transfer kitty since the departure of ronaldo. It does not seem like Fergie wants to spend.
Also I hope that if Rooney were to leave at all, he leaves soon while the team is still in transition.
