i think the only real problem Utd has is the lack of a creative midfielder other than Giggs, Scholes, who are too old to play week-in week-out. The defense is good, just going through a bad spell, the attack is good, wings are fine (with Valencia gone, we're not as good as we were, but still pretty good), the only missing part is that creative midfielder. let's hope one of Nani/Anderson can fill that role, or Carrick can come back into the starting XI

Sure they might have a lot of options, but inconsistency is the main problem. None of those players you mentioned are anywhere near consistent performers, Rooney being the closest though.
Rooney is very inconsistent, he was finally showing some promise last season, but he's back to his normal self now
Berbatov shows up for 3 games a season
Owen shows up for 1 game a season
Bebe hasn't even played
Chicarito is still adapting and I have only seen one decent start from him
Macheda is more of an impact sub than a starting striker
How is that quality?
Compare that to some of the other top strike forces in Europe...

But that's the point, if you have that many options (add Obertan/Giggs for emergencies to that list, and take out Bebe, i seriously doubt he'll play over 5 senior games this yr-excluding carling cup), then the individual players don't necessarily need to be consistent for the team to play well. whoever's playing well, plays, and if someone's going through a bad spell, they don't play. the competition has to help too.
in any case, i don't think Utd have a problem offensively. we didn't have a problem scoring goals last year, and so far, we're not having a problem scoring this year either. the defense needs to stop throwing away leads and making these stupid mistakes over and over again. hopefully Ferdinand's return will rectify that.
other than that, Utd has had a very good start to the season. we always start shit (we haven't this year, hence the very good start), we'll pick up post-Christmas, hopefully, the way it's been for approx 20 years now - a team needs to peak in March/April, not September/October.

They are the only team still unbeaten in the league, and the only other team with a a better away record is blackpool (believe it or not)
They have scored 16 goals, the same as Arsenal and only 4 less than Chelsea
The only problem isn't scoring or consistency, it's the need of a leader.
So yes they will not win the league unless we have a leader that steps up.
Let's just hope its soon.

dude, all we need is to stop throwing away leads. we play well, take a 2, 3 goal lead, and then go to sleep. if the other team doesn't score goals, we help them (deflections, dropping the ball in the area in front of the striker, miss penalties, own goals etc)
once the other team has equalized, we take off our midfield, switch to west brom mode, and mindlessly hit long balls to midgets like chicharito, rooney, and nani

United have now dropped points in games against the likes of Fulham, Bolton, Sunderland and West Brom. I don't think it is possible to win the league without taking full points from such matches. The argument that United are the only undefeated team in the league is pointless, every draw is two points dropped. If you drew every match of the season, you would be undefeated but it would leave you with 38 points, barely avoiding relegation.
I usually never write United off in the league, but this year they honestly don't seem like contenders for the top spot. They may be a good side when all their first choice players are healthy and Rooney is in form, but teams shouldn't rely on such favourable situations or 1/2 key players. United lack the key to title contention...depth.

Haha, I've heard this exact Arsenal argument for the past 5 years.

We have amazing depth, i don't know what you're talking about, in fact, in terms of strength in depth, we're easily among the best in the world. If you're saying that we don't have enough difference makers/game winners, then you have a point, but I really don't see how a team that has players along the lines of Park, Carrick, Hernandez, Evans, Giggs/Scholes on the bench is lacking in depth. Most teams would kill to have a substitutes bench like that.
