Just to be safe: After! I bought a used book and when I went to class the prof said "it's not required and it's just there as a resource."
Never opened it and regretted wasting time and money!

Doesn't really matter, find out if you need the text before you buy it though.

It would be much better to buy ur textbooks after your first class. IMO, you should wait at least a week after your first class to know if you actually need a textbook or not, b/c many times textbooks won't actually be useful.

You will get a few severly misinformed people saying to buy before, DONT LISTEN TO THEM. it is always best to buy after the first week of class. That way you can hear from the prof himself what they recommend, and also judge it for yourself

I completely disagree. I'd actually say one of the "things I wished I knew" was wait until a few weeks in to classes to buy books. I've bought so many books that I never used just because I didn't wait to see the professor's teaching style and whether the books would be useful to me or not. Most were not - so much money wasted.

Before. Profs can change, or change their mind, or make it optional.

I did not know that. Thank you very much!

Hmm, I was wondering the same thing, but I've been told that the books on the booklist from titles may change upto 2 weeks into September! Basically, your prof will tell you what you need Hope that helps!
Or... if you're really keen, you can buy the books, but then there's always a chance that the books will change on you

Talk to an academic advisor as soon as possible. Dead serious, don't put this off.

Talk to Sally Williams about this, she'll help you out!
John Hodgins Engineering Building (JHE), Room A214. Go to that office and book an appointment with her...She has office hours Monday to Friday from 1:30pm-4pm.

I've learned that its better to wait after your first class.. some profs might say that the textbook isn't necessary at all. The only downside is that if you DO end up needing the textbook for a class the used textbooks may be sold out from the bookstore.. but you can always use facebook groups to find your textbooks
