Residences don't have cafeterias. You do have kitchens on every floor though. The one exception to this is Mary Keyes Residence which has a restaurant and a 7/11 type store on the main floor. Otherwise, you have to leave your residence to go eat at places like the Keyes restaurant (It's called Bistro), or Common's Marketplace (which is more of a cafeteria type setup).

There are other place to eat on campus, but those will be the most common for you.

There's no cafeterias in any of the residences.

You can eat in any of the common rooms in your residence or in your own room. You aren't allowed into other residences.

All the food places also have places to sit down and eat. The most cafeteria style is Commons which is in North Quad (NO-RTH, NORTH QUAD WHAT!). It has a bunch of different places to get food and then after you pay there are lots of tables with seats to eat at.

The Student Centre also has seats to eat at and different places to get food. The Student Centre tends to be extremely crowded though.

Other food places like Bridges or Bistro are restaurant style and very nice atmospheres.

You can eat anywhere and you can bring in your own food if you want for example if you and a friend go there to eat and one of you brings in something from another place and another wants to eat there. However at Bridges you can't bring in any meat producers as it is a vegetarian place. I highly recommend it btw even if you aren't a vegetarian.

There are also other cafes in different buildings around campus and other places to get food.

Bonus about most of the buildings in North Quad, there's an underground tunnel from residences straight to Commons so in bad weather or at night you don't even have to go outside to get food. Whidden, McKay, Brandon and Woodstock have underground tunnels to Commons.

You can go from McKay to Commons without using the underground though. There's head protection in that area. You'll see when you get there. Whidden isn't that far from Commons either, it's like a 10second walk.

Some people find the mattresses to not be very comfortable (they are pretty thin), so you might want to think to bring some of that foam they sell at places like Walmart that you put on your bed to make it more comfy. It makes it feel a lot nicer.

Are we able to see the rooms and common areas on summer orientation days?

Hmmm. Not sure. on Welcome Day, August 7th, you can do residence tours though. They are available at all residences from 10am to 2pm. You can definitively see most if not all the residences.

You are allowed to see sample rooms on Welcome Day, but not your individual room. They'll have a couple of rooms open on the first or second floor for you to check out.

Another quick question: do the rooms lock/unlock by key or card?

Make sure you don't lose either! They are really expensive to replace. :(
