The typical black or green garbage bags are too big for the cans in the rooms. I'd recommend the smaller, kitchen or bathroom variety garbage bags for them.

the microwaves are in the common kitchen, so we aren't allowed to bring our own and keep it in our room, correct?

yeah. you can't bring any appliances that draw lots of power, like kettles, coffee makers, microwaves... but there is a full kitchen on each floor, so I wouldn't worry at all. it's better to save space in your room!

I think it's more like you can't USE any appliances that pose a fire hazard, which is basically everything used for cooking, in your room. You can still bring your own kettle if you want, you just have to bring it to the kitchen every time you want to use it.
