I have merged this thread with the MacPass thread in the "First Year Questions" forum. It is now one massive thread all about MacPass 2009. The "Worth Buying A MacPass?" thread has been closed. Please post all questions about MACPASS 2009 in this thread. Thanks!

---

Here is all the information provided about MacPass via the First Year Experience Office website, and what you get with it. Read the items that you get with it and if you feel they are worth the money, then buy it. For students in residence, I feel it is worth more as there are specific residence events which you will want to take place in. For off-campus students, there are certain concerts and Faculty Day events that can make the pass worth it if you attend them all. However, if you don't see yourself attending those events, then you can still go and enjoy certain WW activities without the pass.

Here's the link: http://fye.mcmaster.ca/orprmacpasses.html

Also check out the other discussions on MacInsiders about MacPass:Last year these events did NOT REQUIRE the MacPass:
  1. MAC Connector (meet hundreds of fellow students all at once with icebreakers and games)
  2. Faculty Hollow Concerts
TWO concerts, both are first-come-first-serve and will be two really well-known bands... but we can't say who yet! Keep checking back to MacInsiders and the MSU Campus Events website for details.
  3. Airbands
  4. PJ Parade (travel through the streets of the McMaster community showing your spirit)
  5. Comedy Night (featuring a top comedian!)
  6. Late Night Movie
  7. Sidewalk Sale
  8. Hypnotist
  9. Clubsfest - Sept 3rd, the Wednesday (be sure to stop by the MacInsiders booth!!!)
  10. MSU Tent/Table - Pick up your FREE almanac and wall calendar!
  11. Maroons - look out for the Maroons, they'll want to see your Mac spirit!
  12. Shinerama - read more
  13. Finale

daisy says thanks to Chad for this post.

Lol I'm So Bringing my Vuvuzela, most probably the first time debut of it in Canada before it gains momentum before next years Football World Cup in S.A, It's a pity that we don't get them here otherwise Socsci could have sweeped the faculty cup
It actually does sound like a ninja bumble bee with a bad cell connection leaving you a 30 minute voicemail

Lolll I love it! My friend is getting one from Tunisia for me hopefully! I would love to somehow be part of a 60,000 crowd who is blowing them the whole of 90 minutes *sigh* but yeah lol I can imagine actually being in the stadium and having them blow all the time right beside your ear must be a bummer

SOCS (Society for Off Campus Students) do events just like the residences do so if you want to meet other students who will be living Off Campus or do the Faculty events its still worth it. SOCS get shirts too just like a residence would.

They win the Welcome Week Cup a lot too so there must be something great about SOCS WW.

It depends when you plan on moving in though and if you intend to come to campus for events and stuff.

If you don't buy a Macpass though you can still go to the events that don't require it but you might have more trouble meeting people if you don't. For example without a Macpass you won't get to do Faculty day/night or the SOCS nights so you'll just be around alone or whatever so you may find it difficult to meet people if you're not in a group.

Faculty day is a nice way to meet people who you will be seeing for the next 4 years; so that alone I think makes it fairly worth it to get.

I'm wearing my WW shirt right now. lame? or awesome?

Yes, $120 is a lot of money. Does that suck? yes. Is it worth it? yes. Not to say that being a sheep is a good thing, but when I was in first year, it seemed like EVERYONE had purchased a MacPass. And those that didn't? You could pick them out of the crowd, because they weren't wearing their residence / faculty shirts. It's definitely a bonding thing.

I've heard this year that they're going to be making a lot more of the events for MacPass holders only, because as it's been mentioned, in previous years the security measures have been pretty lax. Super Awesome stuff like the Carnival, Monday night social (you need a mac pass to get into the Casino / dance lessons etc), and the concerts a lone make it worth it.

If you decide to not buy a macpass, don't worry - you won't be left out! There are still plenty of free things for you to do (like the block parties, which are awesome! and shinearama). Also, you can buy a macpass last minute on September 6th if you decide to =)

But seriously? buy one!

Everyone go to Shinearama. One of the best Welcome Week events. You get to spend time with people from your residence and get to know them while you raise money for a great cause.
