Centipedes are around, but not necessarily in every house, and your house doesn't have to be dirty for them to be there. However, my mother told me that if I dusted more often, like under my bed and behind my furniture, they wouldn't come out.

They aren't dangerous as far as I know, they like to hang out in dark places - so you usually see them at night. They can be small or big. I did read something about them possibly being able to bite though... so I wouldn't let one crawl on me if I were you. I'd probably flip my lid if it even came close to me at all.

To clarify, I'm talking about

instead of

As for if they're a problem. Probably not. My cousin said he only said a couple when he lived off campus last year (though his house wasn't near my current house, as I recall).

I've only seen one so far, actually. My roommate said he saw another a few days ago. There are a hell of a lot more daddy longlegs in the house than these buggers.

Oh man, one time I was leaning back in my computer chair, and one of those fell out of the light fixture into my eye. Scared the crap out of me. It fell to the floor immediately though and ran away quickly. They move really fast :p. I didn't know those were centipedes.

Like I said before, these centipedes are GOOD for your house. They can be startling, and are admittedly kind of creepy looking, but they are possibly the best cockroach killers out there. They also eat other problem insects. Seeing these centipedes around your house occasionally is a good thing.

If you try to handle them, they can give you a bite that is about equal to a bee sting, but it can't do any real damage.

Wouldn't it be better to have NO cockroaches and no centipedes either? I've never seen centipedes in any other house I've ever lived in, and we've never had a cockroach problem. In fact, I've never seen them anywhere but Hamilton.

The problem with student housing is that you're surrounded by other students too, so no matter how clean you are, if your neighbors are disgusting you can get bug infestations too.

Lysol EVERYTHING, and don't leave food lying around.

Let's switch out of the insect discussion... >_<

There's this cat that keeps showing up in my backyard and always wants to come inside. I fed it a couple of times and the last time my friends came over to pay their rent (they're not doing summer school but still have the house rented) they let the cat come inside.

I haven't seen it in two weeks though... D:

These centipedes live all over this area. I've seen them in Mississauga, I've seen them at my parent's place near Ottawa, I've seen them in multiple houses here in Hamilton. They're ubiquitous, and have nothing to do with the "cleanliness" of a house.

I work in pest control in the summer. I know that there's no reason to worry about or fear most insects, and that many insects and bugs are actually beneficial.

Also, "lysoling" everything is not exactly a good measure either, since continually trying to kill 99.99% of all bacteria leaves the 0.001% of bacteria which are immune, and then you have a big problem when you actually NEED to kill bacteria.

This is a sad commentary on the state of our "pussified" society, where everyone is becoming germophobes, and are afraid of what is harmless and what should be deemed natural.

I thought some centipedes are poisonous, obviously not the ones in houses. I also heard that the bite of a centipede really hurts :\

Instead of lysoling everything, doesn't warm/hot soapy water clean enough for counters?

Yeah, I've heard a trick about using vinegar to help clean surfaces... it's either vinegar by itself, or vinegar with another substance. It's safer than using Lysol which have tons of chemicals in them. Sometimes one can't help it though.

I also heard about that vinegar trick but I can't remember the exact details. It's also important to wash the cloths you use to wipe stuff down and you change sponges every week or two. Bacteria will start growing and you're basically just smearing them around :S

I never saw any roaches or centipedes on campus..but one of the rooms on our floor had a bed bug problem and they had to move out of their room and bunk in the common room while their room was fumigated :/
it sucked..and STUNK fumigation doesn't work well when the windows have a lock on how far they open and with small corridors..
