I also worked as a lifeguard for 3 years and it seems like every other adult/parent has a tattoo now so for me it doesnt seem unique even though what you are getting on your skin could be unique.
My opinion

Everybody has a picture in their wallet.
That's not unique.

Yep. Chinese words, tribal designs, dragons, butterflies, flames: those are unique.
Not implying that anyone here has/will get one of these, but you must admit about 75% of tattoos can be categorized into one of the above.

Insert typical jacked-gym jockies and their tribal tattoos around the arm.

I'm not talking about ******s, I'm referring to people with real tattoos since OP said she's planning on hers actually having some sort of symbolism.
Tattoos are the ultimate tribute.
(Besides, I don't actually care about uniqueness, I'm just saying his point is moot).
And just for argument's sake, who cares if 500,000 people have a tattoo of a sparrow? It represents DOZENS of things. Uniqueness is irrelevant.

I didnt say anything about a picture in a wallet being unique. I am Saying that a picture in a wallet that has the same design is JUST as unique as a tattoo

Back to previous point.
Instead of carrying around a favorite picture of my deceased grandma, I can get it tattooed. Permanent, the ultimate tribute, and ultimate sign of respect.
The fact of the matter, is that tattooing is an art form just like different types of music [etc]. I don't like pop. I don't like rap. I don't see the point. Am I going to judge someone, call them disgusting, and deny them opportunities because I don't like it? No.
Art is subjective with age and you're always going to piss somebody off. So let's all get off our high horses, shall we?

I actually have a tattoo planned for when my parents die as a tribute to them. Not a picture, but nonetheless something permanent to carry around with (on) me once they're gone.

Oh don't worry, because you're a guy, it's totally classy and no one would ever judge you for it. Even if you got it in your nutsack.

but like.. whats the point of getting the tattoo if its on ur back if the reason you're getting it is for you... the only way you'll see it is if you look in the mirror so.. are u getting this tattoo for other people to see (which would go against the advice of everyone that has responded)
i think getting a tattoo is no big deal especially if its for yourself.. like one of friends decided to tattoo the word humility on her wrist to remind herself to be

Well, all my tattoos go on places that are normally covered, and are hardly ever exposed. Hell, you didn't even know I had one for what, like 3 or 4 months after you met me? They're for me, not for anyone else.
