This Week in MacInsiders
By CHAD FULLERTON, MACINSIDERS
I thought it would be neat to do a recap of some interesting discussions and articles that have been posted over the past week and on a regular basis highlight some of the things that you should have checked out or may have missed if you aren't a regular visitor here at MacInsiders.
Getting to know others
A few interesting posts were made in the forums to get to know other MacInsiders members, it seems to be a common theme happening this week. A couple threads that were started such as "
Get to know everyone" as well as one asking
which highschool members attended, and
what everyone's guilty pleasure is. Introduce yourself to everyone else! Also, Mitch started a fun thread asking
what everyone's favourite Wonderland ride is. Share your favourite!
Casio FX-991 MS is $14.99 this week at Canadian Tire + Back to school!
Cippi found that the standardized calculator that all Mac students need to use on exams and tests is on sale at Canadian Tire for $14.99 (down from $19.99). If you're a first year and haven't picked one up yet, it's a good time to get one! It was also pointed out at Walmart is the most expensive. Thanks Cippi! More discussion on the calculator in the forums
here. There's also a discussion by shleyaa about
back to school shopping...what to buy before school starts!
Technology!
This time of year is laptop buying time and we have you covered. Check out our massive and popular
laptops thread which seems to get a lot posted in it this time of year. We also have many articles on technology
here. There's also lots of forum discussion happening right now such as a thread started by Kenvin about
what type of printer to buy (ps. I recommend the Brother Laser Printer, you can read more in my
Mac Tech Tips article). Also, Krista our favourite librarian posted about how the
McMaster Libraries are going Apple! Plus, members have been debating on whether to
write or type out notes. What do you prefer?
Cellphone Plans
Students entering university who don't have a cell phone yet are most likely going to get one for September. A large discussion on cell phone plans was started by jhan523, check it out
here.
Booklist is out
Sabrina posted that the Titles Booklist was released and a lot of discussion about books and how to get books came swarming in. Check out the discussion
here. There's also plenty of articles with tips on buying used books in our
Academic Articles section. There's also many forum threads such as
this one. Also, a discussion was started by HeatherH talking about how expensive textbooks are. Join in on the discussion
here.
Welcome Week 2008!
It's soooo close and we're really excited. MacInsiders posted up the
full schedule for you to check out. See it
here. There's also a load of survival guides and FAQ's posted in the past week you can check out
here,
here, and
here. Make sure to attend Clubsfest and come see us at our booth, and signup for clubs that interest you... just one of the many ways to
meet new people and get involved!
Timetables, timetables, timetables
Wow, people sure love to get their timetables checked! We tried to compile as many of the dozens of threads that were posted into one massive thread
here. Please reply to that thread instead of posting a new one, and read the replies from others, as you may learn a solution to a question you may have by reading answers that have already been posted.
Residence
With res move-in not too far away, there has been a lot of discussion in the
residence forums. Be sure to check out Danielle's list of
what to bring to res, and the massive list of
what to bring to university that shleyaa posted!
Hair Salons
There's a
lot of hair salons around McMaster. Which one do you recommend? dvy88
started a thread to find out just that! Some good responses.
Articles
Loads of great articles posted in the past week, be sure to check out our
archives. Danielle
went on a rant about faculty rivalry, Sabrina went over
lockdown procedures, Mavis gave us some
tips on how to live greener, Nicole wrote about the
inner workings of the IRC, and we lamented about the
discontinuation of the B-LINE bus on campus. We've been
talking a lot about meal plans and food on campus, as well as some great services such as
MOOPS,
the Maroons, and the
McMaster Rowing team. There was also a great overview of
all the MSU Services available to you!
Hope this was useful. Shall we do round ups like this on a regular basis?
