McMaster students get free AV via Sophos. There are also tons of free AV available. The most common ones are AVG and Avast.

or u could try and get kaspersky AV off ebay for $ 5-10. They send u the activation key and it will work for a few years. Why pay that $5 -10? Imo kaspersky is one of if not the best AV. Also u can use for three different PC's no extra charge, therefore ur parents can reuse. Or try selling the key to somene , u can prolly make back ur investment.

AV keys off ebay would have the most chances of being blacklisted ones IMO

I don't see why people need to have such crazy AV. Honestly, don't visit sketchy sites, take advantage of Firefox browser securities and don't open e-mails from people you don't know.

Just download AVG. It's free and good enough. The school also offers one for free over the wireless network when you first log in if you don't have one.

I haven't had anti-virus for years now. People have this misconception that every computer virus is capable of intelligently attacking your computer and replicating itself all over the place while "moving around" between computers on the network to resist you removing it. Most of the time it's a half-assed piece of broken code that screws up before fulfilling whatever it's purpose is.
If you're executing stuff which potentially contains a virus, than you probably deserve it because it's usually very obvious when something is not what you're looking for. I love it when people tell me there computer is too crappy and slow, and I see 90 search bars installed in IE.
Also, I find windows defender to be good enough. I hope the dumbass IT guy that implemented "Cisco Access Agent" at our school can realize that and turn off the stupid feature that keeps insisting I install Kapersky anti-virus, or whatever it's called. I had it before and it wouldn't let me run Starcraft, insisting it was a virus .

[email protected] 90 search bars! once i was using this cousin's pc and i couldnt even see the damn address bar
actually, most viruses need user execution...i keep an antivirus just for the purpose that when i download from some unknown sites, i know i haven't downloaded a virus. just as a hobby, I ask all my relatives to pass me virus files haha (ofcourse, i dont execute them)

Sony's are great, although they are packed with pre-installed crap applications that you don't need. Just remove all that clutter and it'll be great. Espec. if you're willing to pay a bit more and get a blu-ray drive and the new 16" screens XD

if you're not going with a mac, get an HP. Hands down best value and most efficient. Don't go with a dell.

I don't see what everyone has against DELL. I have had 0 problems with my computer. Really, in the end it's just how your treat your computer. If you take care of your computer, then you're going to have good results.

Dell laptops used to be absolutely terrible. They seem to have learned from their mistakes in some of their more recent models though. It's going to take a while for people to get over how badly they failed in the past :p.
I never had problems with their desktops. I still have my original Dell 4600 (my first legit PC ) and it still works fine... well, what's left of what was originally in there :p.

That's the awesome thing about desktops, upgradability (Yes, so awesome I made up a word for it).
