Of course if you're not interested in the specializations, then don't bother with them - the general stream is great. It just seems as if you're making your decision based on Anatomy alone when in fact all three streams can take it.

EDIT: Crap, forgot that transfers have to take a 6 unit Inquiry. Not sure how that would work with taking Anatomy in a specialization...(or maybe it does work?)
Yes unfortunately with 2D06 there's no room for anything else :(

I realize I could take it in 3rd year but I'm not sure if that's what I want to do at this point because of the limited electives in 3rd year.

Lots of decisions, so little time..

Well even with the 6 unit Inquiry, we still have 6 units of electives in second year, but in that case, I would use them for both orgos. So then I guess I would take anatomy in fourth year? What I was confused about was in the GH specialization, why do we get so many units of electives in third year when one of those semesters is spent abroad.

Really? I thought third year Global Health gets only 6 units of electives (restricted to one semester).

Ah, I see. Well, don't fret about it too much - many of the courses are the same between the specializations and the general stream. I guess just pick whichever one you know you'll enjoy.

I may have remembered it incorrectly and I'm trying to find the page right now. Does anyone know how to get to the course page where they tell you the required courses for each program/specialization? I hate navigating McMaster's websites, each one's harder than the previous

Yup, I remembered it wrong

Question for the previous Life Sci to Health Sci transfers. Was Bio 1A03 sufficient knowledge for Cell Bio 2K03?

Yes... don't worry, inquiry is mostly self-learning anyway so you'll be up to par with everyone else.

Global Health Specialisation
hey you guys,

So I haven't been that active on macinsiders recently. But I hope that I can answer some of your questiosn regarding this speciality. I'm entering into 4th year in this specialisation. I know that transfer students are eligible to enter into the specialisation all you would need to do is email Dr. Barrett and enquire about the process.

It is true that in the global health specialisation that you get fewer electives spaces. Since this is a really new programme the curriculum is always changing and being improved. We were recently approved by McMaster's senate last year.

It is important to note that if you enter into this specialisation is a 4 year commitment. You are expected to complete all 3 years of the specialisation. That, being said you will still have enough elective space to take whatever courses you want. One of my peers in my class chose to take Anatomy in 3rd year instead of 2nd year for example. In the 4th year you have 9 units of elective space.

Personally I feel that the specialisation provides students with a lot of benefits. The classes are relatively small. Secondly, there is a very close knit community between years. The specialisation also provides you the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge in the field during 3rd year.

I would be happy to give more information or have a conversation regarding the specialisation. Just PM me.

Dan

I was really considering GH, but I think it's too late to apply for the specialization now because they wanted the application in by Sunday

Bernard if you are still interested and are willing to commit to the program it couldn't hurt to send in the application (if possible) or email Dr. Barrett directly.

Hey everyone : )
Really enjoying the interest in the specializations within the BHSc. program. I'm currently in the Global Health Specialization - and a recurrent theme here is the LACK of electives. While that is true, it still is up to you in terms of what you make of it.

There are two transfers currently in my cohort - and one of them took both Anatomy courses (the other hails from Nursing - so she has already completed it in first year). I took both Anatomys as well - and I thought it definitely was a good use of my elective space. Keep in mind, Orgo is always offered in the summer, so if you want you can take it during the summer. I finished that in the summer of my first year.

If you're still debating, the Embedded Learning Experience can also be completed in the SPRING/SUMMER term if you wish. This can free up a whole semester of your elective space; allowing you to take a whole variety of electives that fit your prerequisites/interests.

I understand that the Specialization does limit your elective space - but I treat it as using my electives space towards something that I'm truly interested in. Overall, I'm taking basically the same courses as my peers in BHSc. It's just that in addition to the core courses, we have electives that I find very interesting. Don't get the lack of electives boggle you down - just plan them out beforehand, and I think you'll realized, you'll be fine in terms of elective space.

So what's everyone taking as their electives?
