Isn't this all a bit off topic now?

Welcome to the internet.

I'm glad to see Godwin's law doesn't hold on this forum.

While Facebook privacy is relevant in the fact that the accused has an open Facebook profile, try and stay on topic please

Why do people always need to defend themselves? Why can't we just speak, yeah sure sometimes we'll contradict ourselves, who cares?

How can one ever vouch for you, or confidently say that you stand for this and not that...when you're always contradicting your own self?
If he's gonna antagonize (albeit, passively) other posters for having privacy settings, it doesn't help his case when his views stated the opposite like 20 posts prior. Anyhoo, major tangent - just wanted to throw in my 2 doubloons.

As for Mr. Pardoe, he was in my 1st Yr IntroPsych Tutorial and he was one of the few people who wasn't really scared to speak up without being put on the spot. I was shocked to find out it was him when i facebooked him, but i had an inkling because "Emerson" isn't a very common name. I'm glad this debacle is now over and i honestly wish him the best in rebuilding his life because taking a hit that big, that early in life....that's gonna be rough, man.

Well said. I've never put an elevator on fire but that doesn't mean I haven't made mistales. Honestly, if he learns from this I'll be happy and not gonna lie.. I'm pretty sure he's learned a lot as it is. I don't care what anyone says but I truly believe all mistakes are equal. Whether you tell a million white lies or you burn down the elevator. We perceive one mistake as bigger as another based on laws and society as a whole. No one in this forum can deny that they have made mistakes before nor can they deny (if they drink) how they can get a little carried away and do stupid things. We're as human as Emerson. He's made a mistake that now everyone knows about. Let's move on before we become the paparazzi that ruined Britney Spears.

P.s. she's so hot right now

So raping a 12 year old and lying to your mom about stealing 10 dollars from her purse is the same as lighting a fire in an elevator? Really? I'm pretty sure that by the time you're in university, you should know that when fire receives more oxygen, it doesn't get smaller.

He's an idiot and because of his stupid action that affected 600 people, he deserves to be scrutinized for it. You can choose to forgive him and I can choose to continue calling him an idiot.

I mean, if we REALLY want to talk about opinions and our personal values, I could go on about how I think our system focuses way too much on rehabilitation but... I think that's for another day.

I think the main idea that was brought up in this discussion was that it is not our place to insult this individual nor to scrutinize him. He is currently in the hands of the law and it is their role to investigate how to properly handle the case.
As for now, we should only look into seeing what we can learn from it and move on.

Few quick things:
1) I don't believe all mistakes are equal. The audacity and complete absence of common sense that factor in committing a crime like arson, sort of pale in comparison with the audacity you had in stealing $10 from your mother. Perhaps you meant sin? But then the atheists & agnostics might jump me, so meh.

2) Paparazzi did not make Britney Spears fat, bald, or cause her downward spiral into what everyone used to make fun of 6 months ago. They no doubt amplified it (at least to us), but she was messed up on her own. Also during her "comeback" appearance at that award show, i was surprised how much attention was paid to her body...like really?? It wasn't even covert in any way, they just all stared "omg, that's her real body".

3) I apologize for adding to the chain of discussions tangential to this topic.

As citizens of this society, that's EXACTLY what we should be doing in this situation! We all have opinions and this guy and why he did what he did, and it's best to express them. Sometimes the best way to express your feelings is to call this guy out as the attempted murderer he is.

P.S. Emerson has removed himself from the McMaster network so we are no longer able to view his profile on facebook.

know Emerson screwed up and screwed up BIG. Don't get me wrong I'm upset as well, as I'm a Welcome Week Rep for Hedden and my buddies and I helped out with Brandon move-in, move-out and move-in (hotels). However, as much as I like to let people express their feelings, I ask you to put yourself in his situation right now. He's pretty much screwed for life, and I'm sure all the Brandonites want blood lol. Moreover, his parents are out 50 grand, he's due in court, facing serious jail time. What's flaming him going to accomplish? NOTHING, he cant view this forum. Just leave it alone, he's probably in hell as it is, no need to treat him worse.
